Gothic Idols - Robert Smith

Robert James Smith, born in England on 21 april 1959, is a songwriter, lead singer and guitarist for the band The Cure.
His intricate guitar playing and innovative use of flanging, chorusing and phasing effects has led him to be considered a pioneer guitarist in the goth and new wave genres. He also played in the band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Besides guitar, Smith plays the 6-string bass and keyboards.

He is also known for his appearance - teased hair, black clothes, pale skin, smudged red lipstick and black eyeliner - as well as his distinctive voice.

Smith was raised as a Catholic and went to Notre Dame Middle School and St. Wilfrid's Comprehensive School in Crawley. He was an accomplished student who maintained high marks, but after he began playing guitar at the age of 11 his primary focus quickly became his music. He was influenced by The Beatles, Nick Drake,Jimi Hendrix, Thin Lizzy, The Stranglers, Wire, Buzzcocks, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Ink Spots, The Statler Brothers, Syd Barrett, Joy Division and David Bowie.

Smith began sporting his trademark style of smeared red lipstick, eye-liner, pale complexion, artfully dishevelled black hair, black clothes, and trainers in the early 1980's, around the same time as the Goth subculture got its start. However, Smith denies any link and claims it's a coincidence that the styles are similar, stating that he has worn make-up since he was young and saying, "It's so pitiful when 'goth' is still tagged onto the name The Cure."

His song writing for the band's early albums centered around themes of depression, loneliness, and isolation. The sombre mood of these early albums, along with Smith's on-stage persona, cemented the band's "gothic" image.

KoRn - concert review

I know, KoRn are not part of gothic music, they are just alternative crossover band, but I noticed that goths are very interested in them especially since the singer Jonathan Davis made the soundtrack of one of goths most beloved movie "Queen Of The Damned" . (see songs like "Forsaken" or "System") , in fact at the concert there were many gothlings. But, why am I talking about them?? Because yesterday I went to their concert!! :D :D :D

KoRn is one of my all-time favourite band. I've been listening to them since 1995 (maybe 1994..I don't remember exactly..) and since then I never got tired of them and they never disappointed me. I couldn't miss the concert that was held 20 minutes away from my house in front of one of  Italy's best villas (Villa Contarini). Couldn't ask for a better location.

And yes. Jonathan Davis is definitely one of the best frontman I've ever seen. Maybe he's not the hottest man on earth but he is definitely one of the most fascinating. His voice is fantastic and particular...and so is his famous mic stand. Designed by Giger. *-*

The new drummer Ray Luzier is amazing. They couldn't choose a better one. And Fieldy (bass player) was right in front of me (yes, I was right at the front) and being a bass player myself, I couldn't choose a better place to be.

I even managed to get, not one but TWO picks thanks to my boyfriend and to a very gentle metalhead that was near me (he saw I was sad because I didn't get one and so he gave me the one he took..what a LUCK xD! Almost got the drummer sticks but missed it.

My camera didn't work well unfortunately, too sensitive in the dark and couldn't focus well -_- but in some way it did some very artistic pics that, of course, I'm going to share with you.

(This one look futuristic :P)

Also, did you know that KoRn collaborated with The Cure on a song? For their unplugged cd they had Robert Smith as guest singer and they mashed up their Make Me Bad with In Between Days !!

*-* Sublime.

The Cure is one of the rock bands more popular in the underground scene, with more than 30 years of history.
Founded in 1976, England under the name Easy Cure, that with the pass of the years in 1978 would become what we know today as The Cure. Passing for changes in the line-up, with the most stable members, the founder Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, and Porl Thompson (founder who has left and returned to the band on three occasions).
The band began to play post punk sounds, but the feature and essence of The Cure are their rock sound with dark atmospheres and with the time also using more pop sounds, Their metaphorical and gloomy lyrics written by Robert, are about desires for something more, breathlessness, hopelessness, loss of innocence, and above all to love.

There was a period where there was an association between The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees, because Banshees tour in late 1979, Robert played covering the gap left by the departure of guitarist John McKay, and he continued till help to record the albums "Hyaena" and "Nocturne".
