The Dutchess

A chronicle of the life of 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, who was reviled for her extravagant political and personal life. 

Georgiana Spencer became Duchess of Devonshire on her marriage to the Duke in 1774, at the height of the Georgian period, a period of fashion, decadence, and political change. Spirited and adored by the public at large she quickly found her marriage to be a disappointment, defined by her duty to produce a male heir and the Duke's philandering and callous indifference to her. She befriends Lady Bess but finds she is once again betrayed by her husband who wields his power with the three eventually living uncomfortably together. Against this background, and with the pressures of an unfaithful husband, strict social pressures and constant public scrutiny, Georgiana falls passionately in love with Charles Grey, a rising young Whig politician. However, despite his ongoing liaison with Lady Bess, the Duke refuses to allow her to continue the affair and threatens to take her children from her. 

Marie Antoinette

The retelling of France's iconic but ill-fated queen, Marie Antoinette. From her betrothal and marriage to Louis XVI at 15 to her reign as queen at 19 and to the end of her reign as queen and ultimately the fall of Versailles. 

Marie Antoinette is a 2006 film, written and directed by Sofia Coppola. It won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. I personally think this is one of the best revisitation of the story of Marie Antoinette. Ironically interpreted but still serious.

The film's soundtrack contains New Wave and post-punk bands New Order, Gang of Four, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bow Wow Wow, Adam and the Ants, The Strokes, Dustin O’Halloran and The Radio Dept. Some scenes utilize period music by Jean-Philippe Rameau, Antonio Vivaldi and François Couperin. The soundtrack also includes songs by electronic musicians Squarepusher and Aphex Twin.

Pride and Prejudice

Very well done film adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Starring Keira Knightley like in The Dutchess.

Pride and Prejudice is a humorous story of love and life among English gentility during the Georgian era. Mr Bennet is an English gentleman living in Hartfordshire with his overbearing wife. The Bennets 5 daughters; the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth, the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia. Unfortunately for the Bennets, if Mr Bennet dies their house will be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met, so the family's future happiness and security is dependent on the daughters making good marriages. Life is uneventful until the arrival in the neighbourhood of the rich gentleman Mr Bingley, who rents a large house so he can spend the summer in the country. Mr Bingley brings with him his sister and the dashing (and richer) but proud Mr Darcy. Love is soon in the air for one of the Bennet sisters, while another may have jumped to a hasty prejudgment. For the Bennet sisters many trials and tribulations stand between them and their happiness, including class, gossip and scandal.

Haven't suggested you movies for a long time! It's about time that I do it again!! Here are for you some movies for you weekend!

DEAD BIRDS 

"In Civil War-era Alabama, a band of outlaws takes refuge at an abandoned plantation after robbing a bank that held a cache of Confederate gold. Led by William, the group includes Sam, Todd, Annabelle, Clyde and Joseph. They intend to flee to Mexico, but nightfall and a thunderstorm force the robbers to remain in place. As the night wears on, each member of the group begins to have visions of the atrocities that occurred within the house. As supernatural forces begin to manifest themselves, the six turn on one another. "

FRAGILE

At her new job in a rundown children's hospital, a nurse desperately tries to keep her patients safe from a plague of random, mysterious attacks of what the children calls "the mechanical girl"..

GOTHIKA

Gothika is a 2003 supernatural horror film. Halle Berry plays a psychiatrist in a women's mental hospital who wakes up one day to find herself on the other side of the bars, accused of having murdered her husband.

THE SKELETON KEY

 

This supernatural horror film focuses on a young hospice nurse who acquires a job at a Terrebonne Parish plantation home, and becomes entangled in a mystery involving the house, its former inhabitants, and the hoodoo rituals and magic that took place there.

Movies for the weekend

Last week I didn't suggest you anything because I didn't have the time. But maybe you did take a look at my older movies posts for some ideas on what to watch alone or with your friends! :)

For this week I deeply recommend you, if you love Zombies the movie "ZOMBIELAND" . It's a 2009 comedy movie about zombies (obviously xD). This movie is going to become a cult! At least for me it is already! :P



Plot: After a mad cow virus infection, America is full-filled with zombies. Only few people are still normal. A shy student (Jesse Eisenberg) named "Colombus" who happens to survive thanks to his 30 "in case of zombies" rules, a young apparently bad-ass gun-lover man from Florida (named "Tallahassee") and two sisters (Emma stone as "Wichita" and Abigail Breslin as "Little Rock"). This four people meet and decide to head together towards this amusement park in LA where it is said it's zombie-free...

Believe me..after watching this "Tallahasse" is going to be your god and you are going to say "Bill F***n' Murray" a lot of times xDxD

If you want to see something more "serious" i deeply suggest you "SHUTTER ISLAND" .it's a psychological thriller movie of 2010 directed by Martin Scorzese starring Leonardo Di Caprio.



Plot: In 1954, U.S. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels and his newly assigned partner Chuck Aule, go to the Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island located in Boston Harbor. They are investigating the disappearance of Rachel Solando, a patient who apparently vanished from a locked room. Dr. John Cawley, the head psychiatrist, explains that Rachel was institutionalized after drowning her three children. But at some point Teddy starts having doubts on why he's there and finds out an horrible thruth..



Like a E.A. Poe' novel you'll have to watch it till the very last end to understand it.

Movies for the weekend

For this week I suggest you 2 movies that willl blow your mind!

The first is "CORALINE" ! The director of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" presents us a new stop-motion animated movie with a dark twist!



Plot: When Coraline moves to an old house, she feels bored and neglected by her parents. She finds a hidden door with a bricked up passage. During the night, she crosses the passage and finds a parallel world where everybody has buttons instead of eyes, with caring parents and all her dreams coming true. When the Other Mother invites Coraline to stay in her world forever, the girl refuses and finds that the alternate reality where she is trapped is only a trick to lure her..


This is one of my favourite movies and you are sure going to LOVE it! :D also the soundtrack is very well done!


The second movie I suggest you is VERY VERY scary. It's called INSIDIOUS and i think this is going to become a cult horror/paranormal movie. Really I got so scared I was almost afraid to go to sleep after watching it XD



Plot: A gripping story of a family in search of help for their son, Dalton, who fell into a mysterious comatose on one ordinary morning. Little do they know that there is much more to this endless sleep than meets the eye as they explore the paranormal, and rediscover the past; the key to getting their son back once and for all...

Really don't watch this movie alone!! XD

Also, a fun fact...remember my post about gramophones? In this movie there are scary scenes involving gramophones! xD this confirms once again my theory of presences "talking" through gramophones !! XDXD

Silent Movies -The Silent Era

Here's a little passion of mine. Silent Movies. I don't know exactly the reason why I like them so much. I think they are fascinating. Anything that belongs to the past for me is fascinating. I became interested in silent movies when at school, during German class we had to watch Nosferatu, a 1922 silent movie. But what is exactly a silent movie?

A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound, especially spoken dialogue. In silent films for entertainment the dialogue is transmitted through muted gestures, pantomime and title cards. The idea of combining motion pictures with recorded sound is nearly as old as film itself, but because of the technical challenges involved, synchronized dialogue was only made practical in the late 1920s with the perfection of the audion amplifier tube and the introduction of the Vitaphone system. After the release of The Jazz Singer in 1927, "talkies" became more and more commonplace. Within a decade, popular production of silent films had ceased.

Showings of silent films almost always featured live music, starting with the pianist at the first public projection of movies by the Lumière Brothers on December 28, 1895 in Paris. From the beginning, music was recognized as essential, contributing to the atmosphere and giving the audience vital emotional cues. (Musicians sometimes played on film sets during shooting for similar reasons.) Small town and neighborhood movie theatres usually had a pianist. Beginning in the mid-1910s, large city theaters tended to have organists or ensembles of musicians. Massive theater organs were designed to fill a gap between a simple piano soloist and a larger orchestra. Theatre organs had a wide range of special effects; theatrical organs such as the famous "Mighty Wurlitzer" could simulate some orchestral sounds along with a number of percussion effects such as bass drums and cymbals and sound effects ranging from galloping horses to rolling thunder.

Silent film actors emphasized body language and facial expression so that the audience could better understand what an actor was feeling and portraying on screen.

 The silent film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (translated as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror; also known as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Terror or simply Nosferatu) which I told you about before is a German Expressionist horror film, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok. The film, shot in 1921 and released in 1922, was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with names and other details changed because the studio could not obtain the rights to the novel (for instance, "vampire" became "Nosferatu" and "Count Dracula" became "Count Orlok").

It appears that I'm not the only one so fascinated by this old films.  There are silent movies festival, shows and exhibits around the world.

Almost weekend movies

Although the weekend hasn't come yet, I'll do the movie post this time ;)


The first movie to suggest ist "Mulholland Drive" directed and written by David Lynch.



Although the trailer seems to show a cheap hollywood thriller, this isn't the case. It's an extremely irritating movie with unique characters, dealing with fame, crime, betrayal, finding yourself and... yeah, irritating things ;) Two-thirds of the movie are pretty easy to follow, but the last third is so mind-blowing, I promise you, you have to watch it more than once to understand it completely.
Why I am recommending a movie like that on a goth blog? Two reasons: 1. It often has a very dark atmosphere. 2. David Lynch seems to be a really appreaciated director in the goth-scene.


The second one isn't a movie but an anime series. It's simply called "X".

I loved it when I was about fourteen and now I still like it a lot. It's about the old apocalypse in Tokyo thing and everything a black heart desires ;) The artwork is pretty cool and the story is very dark and it is way not as hard to understand as Mulholland Drive ^^.
Funny thing to know: The opening and ending song of the german version is "Mother Earth" from Within Temptation.

The last one is extremely kitschy and I don't realy know in what way it is goth, but it's so cool.
"A Midsummernights Dream" directed by Michael Hofmann and written by the great William Shakespeare.

In case if you don't know the story, here's the plot:
"Shakespeare's intertwined love polygons begin to get complicated from the start--Demetrius and Lysander both want Hermia but she only has eyes for Lysander. Bad news is, Hermia's father wants Demetrius for a son-in-law. On the outside is Helena, whose unreturned love burns hot for Demetrius. Hermia and Lysander plan to flee from the city under cover of darkness but are pursued by an enraged Demetrius (who is himself pursued by an enraptured Helena). In the forest, unbeknownst to the mortals, Oberon and Titania (King and Queen of the faeries) are having a spat over a servant boy. The plot twists up when Oberon's head mischief-maker, Puck, runs loose with a flower which causes people to fall in love with the first thing they see upon waking. Throw in a group of labourers preparing a play for the Duke's wedding (one of whom is given a donkey's head and Titania for a lover by Puck) and the complications become fantastically funny." taken from imdb.com

The costumes and the background is so full of details, everything looks like out of an fantasymovie and they speak the original shakespeare verses. This is a real movie for a girly night ;)

Movies for the weekend!

Let's start with a very scary movie !! From wicked director Wes Craven, here you are THEY .

Who are they? Creatures who only appear in the dark who can be seen only by people who had a dramatic experience in their life. Their goal? Take you to their world and keep you there forever!






PS. if you are already very scared of the dark, please don't even think of watching this movie...!! :P

Let's change genre..let's get to a famous comic strip turned into a complete movie. I'm talking about THE SPIRIT . You'll love this movie, especially the character of Dr. Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) and his assistan (Scarlett Johannson) ! Very dark and well done graphically, thin sense of humor and a catchy plot..



Fun fact: Dr. Octopus wear New Rock boots !! :P

Last but not least, for the fantasy and owl lovers... THE LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS OF GA'HOOLE !







Plot: When a young owl is abducted by an evil Owl army, he must escape with newfound friends to seek out the legendary Guardians to stop the menace.



This is one of my favourite movies ever!! The owls look so real and the graphic is very detailled! If I knew before it was so well-done i would have watched it at the cinema in 3D! *-*

"9" is an awesome animation movie which came out in 2009. 
It is a 2009 American computer-animated science fantasy film directed by Shane Acker and produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov. The film stars the voices of Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, Martin Landau and Christopher Plummer.



The story begins with an unnamed scientist who was ordered by his nation's dictator to create an artificially intelligent machine called the Fabrication Machine, which was used to build other machines to wage war. However, the Fabrication Machine turned on mankind and wiped out all life. To atone for his part in mankind's destruction and restore life on Earth, the Scientist created nine homunculus-like rag dolls referred to as Stitchpunks, using an alchemic talisman to do so. He dies upon creating the last doll 9...

Sucker Punch was released this year 2011,It's fantasy action thriller directed by Zack Snyder. I'm sure you'll love the characters (clothes!! :P) and the battles !! *-*




PLOT: In the 1960s, a 20-year-old woman nicknamed "Babydoll" (Emily Browning), is institutionalized by her abusive stepfather (Gerard Plunkett) at the Lennox House for the Mentally Insane after she is blamed for the death of her younger sister. Blue Jones (Oscar Isaac), one of the asylum's orderlies, is bribed by Babydoll's stepfather into forging the signature of the asylum's psychiatrist, Dr. Vera Gorski (Carla Gugino), to have Babydoll lobotomized, so she can neither inform the authorities of the true circumstances leading to her sister's death, nor reclaim her recently deceased mother's fortune. As Babydoll enters the institution, she takes note of several items that would be integral if she were to attempt an escape.

In the days prior to her lobotomy, Babydoll retreats to a fantasy world in which she is newly arrived in a brothel owned by Blue, whom she envisions as a mobster. She befriends four other dancers — Amber (Jamie Chung), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Rocket (Jena Malone), and Rocket's older sister, Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish). Dr. Gorski is envisioned as the girls' dance instructor, informing Babydoll that her virginity would be sold to a client known as "The High Roller" (Jon Hamm). Gorski encourages Babydoll to perform an erotic dance, during which Babydoll fantasizes that she was in feudal Japan, meeting the Wise Man (Scott Glenn). After expressing her desire to "escape," the Wise Man presents Babydoll with weapons. He tells her that she would need to collect five items for an escape: a map, fire, a knife, a key, and a fifth, unrevealed item that would require "great sacrifice". Before parting ways, he instructs her to "defend herself," and she is confronted by three demonic samurai, which she defeats. As her fantasy ends, she finds herself back in the brothel, her dance impressing Blue and other onlookers.
Inspired by her vision of the Wise Man, Babydoll convinces her friends to prepare an escape. She plots to use her dances as a distraction whilst the other girls obtain the necessary tools. During each of her dances, she imagines adventurous events that mirror the secretly ongoing efforts. These episodes include infiltrating a bunker protected by steam-powered World War I German soldiers to gain the map (mirrored by Sweet Pea entering Blue's office and copying a map of the brothel); storming an orc-infested castle to cut two fire-producing crystals from the throat of a baby dragon (mirrored by Amber stealing a lighter from the breast-pocket of a client); and boarding a train and combating mechanized guards to disarm a bomb (mirrored by Sweet Pea stealing a kitchen knife from the belt of the brothel's cook)...

This is one of my favourite movies EVER! Guillermo Del Toro is a genius!! That's why i suggest you this other movie by him called

THE ORPHANAGE:

Reminds a lot of the movie The Others, if you liked that you are surely going to love this one! :)

THE CROW (CULT FILM)

The Crow is a 1994 American action-thriller film adaptation of the 1989 comic book of the same name by James O'Barr. The film was written by David J. Schow and John Shirley, and directed by Alex Proyas.

The Crow stars Brandon Lee, in his final film, as Eric Draven, a rock musician who is revived from the dead to avenge his own murder, as well as that of his fiancée. While filming during the last weeks of production, Lee was mortally wounded when a dummy bullet, which had become lodged in one of the prop guns, was shot into his abdomen by a squib. Despite the incident, the film was a critical and commercial success after its release, opening at the top of the box office.On March 31, 1993 at EUE Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington, North Carolina, Brandon Lee sustained an accidental gunshot wound on the set of the film. He was taken to an area hospital where he later died. There were eight days left before shooting of the film was to be completed. The scenes involving Lee and Shinas' characters in their apartment had been saved for the end of filming so that Lee could work the final week without makeup. In the story, Lee's character comes to his apartment where his girlfriend is being raped by a gang of thugs, and then he is shot and killed by Michael Massee's character, playing one of the thugs. Weeks prior to the event, a scene was being filmed that required dummy rounds to be shown being loaded into the handgun. Inexperienced crew members, pressured by time constraints, purchased live ammunition, removed the bullets, dumped the gunpowder, and then replaced the bullets back into the empty cartridges with the live primers still in place.

 THE CROW SOUNDTRACK :

The original soundtrack album for The Crow features songs from the film, and was a chart-topping album. It included work by The Cure (their song, "Burn", became the film's main theme), The Jesus and Mary Chain, Rage Against the Machine, Helmet and Stone Temple Pilots.

Several groups performed covers. Nine Inch Nails rendered Joy Division's "Dead Souls"; Rollins Band covered Suicide's "Ghost Rider"; and Pantera performed Poison Idea's "The Badge". The Stone Temple Pilots song "Big Empty" won an MTV Movie Award in 1995. It was not their original choice for the soundtrack. They recorded a version of "Only Dying", a demo they had recorded earlier as Mighty Joe Young, which was replaced following Lee's death.
