Emilie Autumn...News for the fans

I recently found out (maybe some of you already knew) that Emilie Autumn has realeased a book called "THE ASYLUM FOR WAYWARD VICTORIAN GIRLS".

What is the book about?

"Written and illustrated by the notoriously manic-depressive rock star, this chilling tale combines humor, tragedy, and suspense to produce a blood-curdling account of the nightmare that is life inside an insane asylum, comparing those from the Victorian era with our modern day version, and proving, through her own personal experiences, that not much has changed from then to now.

Culled directly from EA's real-life diary entries, the story begins with Emilie's suicide attempt and prompt imprisonment inside a psychiatric hospital. Sparing no detail, Emilie shows us exactly what goes on inside this house of horrors, exposing secrets that the general public could never have guessed at. Narrated with the sarcastic and self-deprecating humor present in all of EA's works, much of the subject matter may be considered controversial. Still, as in her song lyrics, Emilie tells the truth at all costs, thrusting the brave reader into a play-by-play narrative of her bi-polar episodes, even providing photos -- blood, cuts, and all.

The tale takes an unexpected turn when, whilst still in the psych ward, Emilie discovers evidence of a parallel dimension -- a world that soon becomes indiscernible from her own. As the days go by, the seemingly disparate worlds of the story's two lead characters (Emilie and Emily, EA's Victorian counterpart) begin to merge, leaving the reader, as well as the book's author, rather confused as to whether the accounts are truly autobiographical or whether EA has managed to seamlessly morph from true-life tale to extremely well-researched historical fiction.

"The Asylum..." is not all gloom and doom however. It is a reality-bending thriller as well as a profoundly empowering tale of suffering, sisterhood, and revenge that culminates in what is perhaps one of the most suspenseful cliff-hangers of all time. The book's colorful cast of characters (diabolical doctors, mental patients, and the talking plague rats and blood-sucking leeches that fans of EA's music are already familiar with) thoroughly entertain, educate, and engross the reader with prime movie material. "The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls," will leave fans shocked and readers everywhere gasping for air.

Each full-color page of this beautifully bound, 266 page hardcover is positively packed with hand written memoirs, fanciful paintings, and sketches of the Asylum's inhabitants. In perhaps the most perverse twist of all, this Rated R publication is cleverly disguised as a high-end children's activity book, complete with interactive elements including notes, craft patterns, and reader quizzes designed both to disturb and delight. This monumental show of literary and artistic talent demands a place on your tea table as well as on your nightstand, although, readers, take care -- you'll never think of your doctor in quite the same way again.

Prepare yourself to enter a world most pray never to visit. But beware: It is much easier to get into the Asylum than it is to get out..."

The cost of the book is around 55 US dollars and you can purchase it her official site.

Only Black?? Hell no.

Looking around on the internet and also on Stardoll I could see that many associate goth with the color black a bit too much. Most of these people think that only wearing black all the time makes you look goth but the truth is the exact contrary. The color black is in fact the color of darkness, of mistery and of the unknown, of fear but you should also consider wearing colors like PURPLE , RED, BLUE, GREEN and even PINK. I've seen goths saying the stupid stereotype that goths hate pink and light blue. Absurd. The point is not what color you wear but HOW you wear it. Let's make a clear example with the color pink. Look at these pics:

Non-goth

Goth

See?? Now..come and tell me the second pic isn't goth because she wears pink!! xD

STOP STEREOTYPING! :)

Cybergoths

"What is Cybergoth?" you may ask. Cybergoth is the one of the most common forms of goth around. Their style is heavily influenced by Rivethead, Steampunk, and Raver style. You can easily identify them by bondage gear, platform boots, glossy clothing, synthetic dreads, goggles, and the enormous amount of neon colors they wear. As far as the music goes, Cybergoths would usually tend to listen to EBM, Electro, Industrial, Techno, Trance, and Synth-pop. Cybergoths are usually found at the nightlife scene (bars, clubs, lounges, etc.) or around the internet, and can be very social. Chances are you might've already met them ^_^

Lacrimosa is a gothic band formed in Germany by Tilo Wolff in November of 1990.
Currently residing in Switzerland and is formed by the permanents members Tilo Wolff on vocals, piano, guitar, trumpet, fluegelhorn and Anne Nurmi on vocals, keyboard, synths with addition to supporting music, who have varied over the years, Jay P Genkel in guitar, Dirk Wolff in guitar, Yenz Leonhardt in bass and Mane Uhlig in drums.
Tilo Wolff is the owner of the label "Hall Of Sermon", Lacrimosa edits all his albums in it like another bands.
Lacrimosa mix musical styles such as elements of gothic metal, gothic rock, trumpet, and other classical instruments. Their lyrics are written primarily in German, although some of his albums have content in english, spanish, latin and finnish. Their songs mainly are about loneliness, sadness, darkness, despair, happiness, hope, despair, death and love.
In The Begining the songs of the band was of the Darkwave genre, with melancholic and nostalgic melodies accompained of a depresive, deep and nostalgic voice, wich is demostrated in their demo cassette "Clamor" and Their first albums "Angst" and "Einsamkeit", this last album have Gothic Rock influences wich persist in the next album "Satura" where  covers topics such as fear, helplessness, loneliness, the non-existence, lack of love and death. Every album onwards, from Satura, has a song that is taken as a single later.
In the beginning of 1994 Anne Nurmi joined to the band as a second and permanant member. She was part founder, and also a singer and keyboard player of the Finnish band Two Witches, put new emphasis within the music of Lacrimosa with her extraordinary voice and composing skills. In 1995 they released "Inferno", where Anne Nurmi full participation in the making, collaborating with her voice for the first time, in this album we can hear different music than that of their earlier work, giving it a touch heavier, using guitars, bass and keyboard, arguably, the now familiar Gothic Rock becoming in Gothic Metal, but it is not until 1997 the band releases "Stille", an album that can be described as Gothic Metal. in 1998 releases their first live album, "Live", followed by "Elodia" in 1999 reducing the power of guitars, focusing on symphonic elements with the support of the famous London Symphony Orchestra, sounds continue in the album of 2001 "Fassade", also including soft melodies. In 2003 was released "Echos", an album focused on Classical and Symphonic elements, leaving out the sounds of guitars. "Lichtgestalt" was released in 2005 whe the content again to emphasize themes of love and light using elements of Classical music and Gothic Metal. After two years of Lichtgestalt tour, in 2007 goes on sale its second live album, titled "Lichtjahre". "Sehnsuch" was released in 2009, is characterized by the clear implementation of trumpets and having a heavier sound than the previous album.
By May 2010, on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary, on sale Lacrimosa launched a new album titled "Schattenspiel". It contains 18 songs. 14 previous unreleased albums and two entirely new.

Lacrimosa is a gothic group par excellence, because they have evolve in sound, retain their original essence in some way in their compositions.

Flowers Of Evil

This is one of the most important poetries of Baudelaire..usually the first one they teach in schools cause it holds his phylosophy.

Correspondances

La Nature est un temple où de vivants piliers
Laissent parfois sortir de confuses paroles;

TRANSLATION:

Correspondences

Nature is a temple in which living pillars
Sometimes give voice to confused words;
Man passes there through forests of symbols
Which look at him with understanding eyes.

Like prolonged echoes mingling in the distance
In a deep and tenebrous unity,
Vast as the dark of night and as the light of day,
Perfumes, sounds, and colors correspond.

There are perfumes as cool as the flesh of children,
Sweet as oboes, green as meadows
— And others are corrupt, and rich, triumphant,

With power to expand into infinity,
Like amber and incense, musk, benzoin,
That sing the ecstasy of the soul and senses.

Charles Baudelaire - Part 1

And now (finally!) the article about Charles Baudelaire that I promised you!! Enjoy reading !!

Charles Pierre Baudelaire (pronounced /ˌboʊdəˈlɛər/; French: [ʃaʁl bodlɛʁ]; April 9, 1821 – August 31, 1867) was a nineteenth-century French poet, critic, translator and... drug addict. A controversial figure in his lifetime, Baudelaire's name has become a byword for literary and artistic decadence. At the same time his works, and in particular his book of poetry Les fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil), are acknowledged as classics of French literature.

In 1846 and 1847, Baudelaire became acquainted with the works of Poe, in which he found tales and poems that had, he claimed, long existed in his own brain but never taken shape. Baudelaire had much in common with Poe (who died in 1849 at age forty). Both had a similar sensibility and macabre and supernatural turn of mind; both struggled with illness, poverty, and melancholy. Baudelaire saw in Poe a precursor and tried to be his French contemporary counterpart. From this time until 1865, he was largely occupied with translating Poe's works; his translations were widely praised. Baudelaire was not the first French translator of Poe, but his "scrupulous translations" were considered among the best. These were published as Histoires extraordinaires (Extraordinary stories) (1852), Nouvelles histoires extraordinaires (New extraordinary stories) (1857), Aventures d'Arthur Gordon Pym, Eureka, and Histoires grotesques et sérieuses (Grotesque and serious stories) (1865). Two essays on Poe are to be found in his Oeuvres complètes (Complete works).

HIS PHYLOSOPHY:

Many of Baudelaire's philosophical proclamations were considered scandalous and intentionally provocative in his time. He wrote on a wide range of subjects, drawing criticism and outrage from many quarters.

Love

"There is an invincible taste for prostitution in the heart of man, from which comes his horror of solitude. He wants to be 'two'. The man of genius wants to be 'one'... It is this horror of solitude, the need to lose oneself in the external flesh, that man nobly calls 'the need to love'."

 Marriage

"Unable to suppress love, the Church wanted at least to disinfect it, and it created marriage."

 The artist

"The more a man cultivates the arts, the less randy he becomes... Only the brute is good at coupling, and copulation is the lyricism of the masses. To copulate is to enter into another–and the artist never emerges from himself."

"Style is character"

 Pleasure

"Personally, I think that the unique and supreme delight lies in the certainty of doing 'evil'–and men and women know from birth that all pleasure lies in evil."

 Politics

"I have no convictions, as they are understood by the men of my century, because I have no ambition... However, I have some convictions, in a nobler sense, which cannot be understood by the men of my time".

THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF THE ARTICLE. There's so much more to write about him especially about his phylosophy. I have to work on it because in English it's hard to find material for the article. :P so consider this a little resume, a part 1 xD

Goth Festivals - WAVE GOTIK TREFFEN

Wave-Gotik-Treffen  ("Treffen" means "the meeting") is an annual world festival for "dark" music and arts in Leipzig, Germany. More than 150 bands and artists from various backgrounds (Gothic rock, EBM, Industrial, Noise, Darkwave, Neofolk, Neoclassical, Medieval Music, Experimental, Gothic metal, Deathrock and Punk) play at several venues throughout the city over 4 days. The festival also features several fairs with medieval, gothic and cultural merchandise.

With 18,000 to 20,000 regular attendants, the WGT is one of the largest events of the Goth-, Cybergoth-, and Rivethead- subcultures worldwide.
The largest installment of the WGT was the one of the year 2000 with over 300 acts and an estimated 25,000 visitors.

A first attempt at a Treffen was made in 1987 in Potsdam. However, as the laws of the German Democratic Republic made this kind of event illegal, only a few hundred visitors attended.

In 1992, after the re-unification of Germany, the first official Wave-Gotik-Treffen was held in the Eiskeller club in Leipzig. Since then, the number of visitors has increased greatly.

There are Renaissance fairs, Viking and Pagan markets, Gothic Romance events, CD/DVD and film premieres, literary readings, artist signing events, brunches celebrating Absinthe, and many late-night danceclubs such as Darkflower or Moritzbastei with top-name DJs. The main market in the AGRA that runs the entire duration of the festival is perhaps the largest for the goth community anywhere in the world.

PS. More images of this event will be added soon :P

I will fix it soon so don't panic!! xD I'm coming back with brand new articles as you've seen one about the one and only E.A. Poe has been added. Articles soon to be written are about Charles Baudelaire (I'll probably publish one or two of his poetry every week ! ) , something about band Voltaire , about the different kind of goths and about Steampunk. I also thought about publishing some song lyrics with relative explanation of the meaning (if it has one xD).

EDGAR ALLAN POE - genius of terror and mystery

Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American writer, poet, editor and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective-fiction genre. He was born as Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts; he was orphaned young when his mother died shortly after his father abandoned the family. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia, but they never formally adopted him. In January 1845, Poe published his poem "The Raven" to instant success. Poe died in Baltimore; the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents.

Poe's best known fiction works are Gothic, a genre he followed to appease the public taste. His most recurring themes deal with questions of death, including its physical signs, the effects of decomposition, concerns of premature burial, the reanimation of the dead, and mourning. Many of his works are generally considered part of the dark romanticism genre, a literary reaction to transcendentalism, which Poe strongly disliked. He referred to followers of the movement as "Frogpondians" after the pond on Boston Common and ridiculed their writings as "metaphor-run", lapsing into "obscurity for obscurity's sake" or "mysticism for mysticism's sake."

Beyond horror, Poe also wrote satires, humor tales, and hoaxes. For comic effect, he used irony and ludicrous extravagance, often in an attempt to liberate the reader from cultural conformity. In fact, "Metzengerstein", the first story that Poe is known to have published, and his first foray into horror, was originally intended as a burlesque satirizing the popular genre. Poe also reinvented science fiction, responding in his writing to emerging technologies such as hot air balloons in "The Balloon-Hoax".

He disliked didacticism and allegory, though he believed that meaning in literature should be an undercurrent just beneath the surface. Works with obvious meanings, he wrote, cease to be art. He believed that quality work should be brief and focus on a specific single effect. To that end, he believed that the writer should carefully calculate every sentiment and idea. In "The Philosophy of Composition", an essay in which Poe describes his method in writing "The Raven", he claims to have strictly followed this method. It has been questioned, however, if he really followed this system. T. S. Eliot said: "It is difficult for us to read that essay without reflecting that if Poe plotted out his poem with such calculation, he might have taken a little more pains over it: the result hardly does credit to the method." Biographer Joseph Wood Krutch described the essay as "a rather highly ingenious exercise in the art of rationalization".

Poe is particularly respected in France, in part due to early translations by Charles Baudelaire. (article about him coming soon!! ;) Baudelaire's translations became definitive renditions of Poe's work throughout Europe.

Tales:

"The Black Cat"

"The Cask of Amontillado"

"A Descent into the Maelström"

"The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar"

"The Fall of the House of Usher"

"The Gold-Bug"

"Ligeia"

"The Masque of the Red Death"

"The Murders in the Rue Morgue"

"The Oval Portrait"

"The Pit and the Pendulum"

"The Premature Burial"

"The Purloined Letter"

"The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether"

"The Tell-Tale Heart"

The influence of Edgar Allan Poe on the art of music has been considerable and long-standing, with the works, life and image of the horror fiction writer and poet inspiring composers and musicians from diverse genres for more than a century:

The Deathrock band Voodoo Church wrote a song for their eponymous 1982 EP called "Second Death," which incorporates several lines from "The Black Cat" into the lyrics Tool featured the lyrics "seems like I'm slipping into a dream within a dream" in the song "Sweat" on their 1992 album Opiate.

Avant-garde Metal band Arcturus have a song on the album La Masquerade Infernale (1997) called "Alone" incorporating the full, unaltered text of Poe's poem "Alone".

The L.A. Goth Rock Duo Creature Feature wrote the song "Buried Alive" about Poe, released in 2007. The song contains over 20 references to Poe's work and life. Works named include "A Dream Within a Dream", "The City in the Sea," "The Valley of Unrest," "Loss of Breath," "The Premature Burial," "The Oblong Box," "Never Bet the Devil Your Head," and many others.

Finnish goth-metal singer Ville Valo of the band HIM frequently cites Poe's work as the inspiration for many of his lyrics, even sporting a tattoo of Poe's eyes on his back.

Marilyn Manson has been quoted saying that some of his inspiration for his music and art comes from Edgar Allan Poe's works, and has even painted a portrait of Poe.

Nox Arcana, an American gothic instrumental duo, pays homage to all of Poe's literary works with their 2007 album Shadow of the Raven.

Several heavy metal bands have made reference to Poe in their recordings. Iron Maiden recorded a song titled "Murders in the Rue Morgue" for their second album, 1981's Killers. Grave Digger's 2001 album The Grave Digger is dedicated to Poe, and some of Poe's works, including "The Raven" and "Fall of the House of Usher" are the basis of a number of songs. Progressive/thrash metal band Nevermore takes its name from "The Raven". Other Metal bands that wrote songs inspired by Poe are: Agathodaimon, Annihilator, Crimson Glory, Ra's Dawn, Manilla Road, Donor, Hawaii, Rage, Metal Church and Stormwitch

Gothic Metal band Tristania have a song called "My Lost Lenore." The song refers to "her raven eyes" and ends similarly to the poem "The Raven," still mourning his lost Lenore.

The neocelt band Omnia has set "The Raven" to music on their 2007 CD Alive!.

The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish is partly inspired by Poe's short story "The Pit and the Pendulum." Poe is one of the favorite writers of the band's leader, Tuomas Holopainen.

Voltaire's song Graveyard Picnic is dedicated to Poe, and includes in the lyrics references to Poe's works, such as The Conqueror Worm, Lenore, Annabel Lee, and The Tell-Tale Heart, as well as mentioning Poe by name.

Gothic Charm School

Gothic Charm School is an invention of Jillian Venters also known as the Lady Of Manners.  Since 1998 she's been writing " an essential guide for goths and those who love them " .

"the world of Gothic Charm School, where the Lady of the Manners spends a not-inconsiderable amount of time trying to gently persuade others in her chosen subculture that being a Goth and being polite is much, much more subversive than just wearing black t-shirts with ‘”edgy” sayings on them.
There’s an added benefit to being a Goth and having good manners; it’s actually more shocking to some people than the “Booooo! I’m so spooky and scary!” freakshow antics they expect from Goths. " ( taken from the official site http://www.gothiccharmschool.com/)

She writes articles both for young goths and for parents of goths or elder goths. Here are some example of the tematics she wrote about:

For the younger Goths:

Help, my parents won’t let me be a Goth!

Talking to parents about their disapproval of your gothy ways.

Goths and school.

On dealing with school dress codes.

For the parents of younger Goths, and for gothy parents:

Raising a Goth.

Being a gothy parent.

Of parents worrying about “Drama”.

For the ElderGoths:

Too old to be a Goth? and Too old to be a Goth, revisited.

Returning to your gothy style after a hiatus.

Aging gracefully.

Some fashion advice:

A quick primer on achieving a gothy look.

Of dressing to flatter one’s figure, and of Elegant Gothic Lolita, Deathrock, and Victorian fashion.

Some fashion advice specifically for the gentlemen.

Recently a book based on her site has been released and got quite a big success (the pic at the beginning of the article is the book cover!!). You can find info about it in the site. I also suggest to take a look at the Lady Of Manners videos like this one:

Everything moved and i wasn't drunk: Cataclysm in Chile

hi, i know the next  thing i'll speak is nothing to do with the thematic of the
blog, but i think is important to me and i wanna share my experience with you.... is about the Earthquake occurred in my country (before mentioned as "ass of the world") Chile... a seismic country, so i'm (we're) accustumed to this kind atmospheric phenomenon.
I'm from the capital and in the dawn of saturday at 3:30 a.m pretty much... all began as an insignificant seism that became increasingly stronger, very stronger.. oh damn it an earthquake! ...the intensity reached was of 8.8 magnitude Richter scale.
fortunately all my loved ones are ok, only with homemade desorders....nothing serious uff!

some buildings fell down, as well as houses, walls, bridges; broken glasses from windows, cracked roads and broken roads.

with all the energy liberated, the autorities waited and anounced tsunamis for Hawai, Japan, Russia and places arround,... and in the late ocurred some tsunamis in the Bio-Bio region (at south), where was the epicenter of earthquake... this zone have been the more affected.

in the most affected places the comunication and basic services are broke up, no electricity, no water, no phone, only comunication by cellphone in the best of the cases.

between the chaos, someones dominated by the hysteria sacked supermarkets and was inmates fled in some prisions, but the police have captured to the most.

at the moment 700 dead aprox.........

fortunately this happened on dawn....i had the privilege of live in a safe apartament, i love my home!!!... but in the corner of my home exist a beautiful church of medieval-barroque-gothic architecture "Basilica Del Salvador" suffered the collapse of a part of their wall...and we're expectant with what will happen with these.

well, after the earthquake, came and come the replicas (seisms), this is common, one are more stronger than others but no with the earthquake magnitude , at the moment more than 100 (according to news), now the concern for someones is the collapse of  some buildings on danger to fall, and the most important...the help to injured people who lost their houses, their belongings and in the worst of the cases their loved ones...

greetings and kisses, i'm ok  :) (who cares xD)

Alice in Wonderland- Fun Facts!!

uuuuuuuuh I forgot to tell you in the other article about some fun facts regarding Alice In Wonderland!!

The First is that our beloved Natalie Shau (the illustrator I told you about in a past article) has made a wonderful picture about AIW that has also finished to be published as the cover of AIW book in different countries!! Here's the cover of the book:

The second fun fact is that Alice really existed. She was a 10 year old girl called Alice Pleasence Liddel that insisted a lot to make Carroll tell her and her 2 sisters the story that then became AIW during a trip on a boat in a golden afternoon (too bad someone found out that the 4th of july 1865 was a rainy day! xD) Also did you know that Alice wasn't blonde with blue eyes?? She was black haired with a fringe! Carroll chose to turn Alice blonde because in the years he lived in being blonde with curly wavy hair was the most loved type of child and women!

This is another Shau's AIW inspired pic! :)

Third thing is that in the Original Soundtrack of the movie the song " A very good advice" is sung by Robert Smith from The Cure :) . Too bad the main song has been given to Avril Lavigne and to others un-talented people. -_-"

Alice In Wonderland

I think that almost everybody in this world is waiting for the new Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movie to come out. I've been waiting almost a year for this!! xD

It will start to be in cinemas on the 2nd March in many countries..Italy for sure infact I'm going to see it that day xd but the official start date is 5th March.

Alice in Wonderland is a 1865 novel by Lewis Carroll (real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson),  an English authour that was also a photographer and mathematician. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky", all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy.

It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar and anthropomorphic creatures. The tale is filled with allusions to Carroll's friends. The tale plays with logic in ways that have given the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the most characteristic examples of the "literary nonsense" genre, and its narrative course and structure have been enormously influential, especially in the fantasy genre.

Many film have been made from this book since 1903!!  But the most famous is the Disney animated movie of 1951 (!!!) that all of us surely has seen. :)

However Tim Burton's movie is different because it tells of 19-year-old Alice that returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny: to end the Red Queen's reign of terror.

Alice character is played by Mia Wasikowska ,Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter (always present in Burton's movies...she's his wife after all xD) plays the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway the White Queen. Micheal Sheen is the White Rabbit and Alan Rickman the blue Caterpillar.

The movie can be seen in 3D too!!

I'm really looking forward to see it..really..I can't wait..and you??
